Ah yes, blue skies, sparkling sand and glorious ice cream melting in one's hands. Is it odd then that the very thought of summer induces a cold apprehensive feeling in my heart? While I don't want to sound like your average killjoy, I cannot bring myself to embrace summer. It's just that every time Summer rears its head, Kiwis feel the need to strangle fashion with rubber jandals( flip flops to Americans), singlet tops and 'boardies.'Not to mention, yesterday happened to be the hottest day in auckland...EVER! While the average Kiwi is not exactly the epitome of chic during winter, she at least has the decency to put on a semi-nice coat and a pair of boots. So, what exactly makes winter fashion superior? Well, I suppose I'll give it to you in a list (as always).
1) It's cardie time!

These erudite looking yet unpretentious things are a godsend. They're comfy, practical and can look oh so chic. I think it is every girl's duty to invest in at least two quality cardigans she can rely on. I have a penchant for baggy knitted ones. The very thought of curling up with a nice book and a cup of cocoa while feeling all snug in a cashmere cardie is enough to make me want to make the earth spin a little faster so that winter may arrive a teensy bit earlier.
2) These boots were made for walking!

Eek, just thinking about boots makes me feel all giddy. So summer has sandals but are they really on par with boots? I think boots are more versatile and more diverse. This season I am loving studded punk rock looking boots.
3) Stockings and knitted socks.
I'm one of those people who like to pair tights with everything and subsequently have a ridiculously large collection of them. If this recession results in the loss of my house, selling of my car, etc. I may be able to pull through by building a new house made entirely with tights, lol. Anywho, back to the point, I adore tights of all different colours and textures. I am also a sucker for chunky woollen socks, they're just too cute to resist!
4) Coats!

One of the biggest perks of winter is the opportunity to wear coats, which happen to be one of my favourite articles of clothing. Seriously, who needs summer when you can prance down the street bundled up in a nice trench coat or a delicate a-line?
5) WInter hats

While I'm all for summer's big floppy hats, I have always preferred the cosy look of winter hats. Bowler hats, knit berets and furry shapkas are only a few of the precious gems I look forward to.
Well, there's my rant over. Better go enjoy the good weather while it's here:-)
