Berlin From 18 Oct 2009 Until 18 Oct 2009
It’s no secret the Eighties have influenced a number of trends this season, and while many conclude it was a cringe-worthy time for fashion – crimped hair, neon- I’ve been incredibly inspired by Newton’s photographs. They capture the decadence of the decade: Brigitte Nielsen standing poolside in Monte Carlo wearing only stilettos, the raw sexuality of a young Jodie Foster, Elizabeth Taylor’s decollete swimming in million-dollar jewels.
Think: deep red lips, patent leather Louboutin’s, diamond anklets and monocle’s. The highy stylized world of Newton’s photography is a treasure trove!
Newton was born in Berlin in 1920 but fled the city as an 18-year-old Jew, fearing the Nazi’s rise to power. Today his photographs are housed only steps away from the train station where he began his journey into exile. From the mouths of many Berliners: “Helmut Newton has come home”.
